Ida Horn Elstrom Nelson
Ida Sophia (Van)Horn Elstrom(Elmstrom) Nelson (1858-1922) is the thread that binds Lindström, Charles Elstrom (Elmstrom) (1854-1884), the Lake View Hotel, John Nelson (1862-1930) and (Villa)Cape Horn.
Ida's story, as told in the August 18, 1988 Chisago County Press article, is one of determination and success. That a letter from her to the railroad and her action in response was to build the Lake View Hotel might have been a major seed for the city of Lindström. According to Chisago Lakes Lutheran Church records Ida married Charles on January 1, 1882. Just 2 years & w 2 children later Ida was a widow. According to the article Ida married John Nelson in 1887 & would go on to hve 5 more children. Nelson was a foreman for the railroad responsible for the construction of bridges & depots from the Twin Cities to Duluth & the Taylors Falls & Grantsburg spurs & he was in charge of the construction of the Lindström depot. The Lake View Hotel was destroyed by fire - in the article before the turn of the century & in the 1994 Lindstrom by the Lake c1915.
The Cape Horn Resort was started after the Lake View Hotel was destroyed and continued until 1937, according to the 1988 article, but was listed for sale in 1946.
