The genial-minded and sunny tempered old gentleman is at rest. A familiar figure among us for many years and having the distinction of being our oldest citizen in this village, as well as a pioneer of Chisago County, his death marks the passing of one whom we had all learned to hold in high reverence and esteem, not merely because of his advanced years but because of his splendid character and honest Christian life.
Mr. Horn was blessed with remarkable health and even when he had passed his ninetieth milestone on life's journey, we saw him as was his custom for years to cross the Lindstrom Bridge, carrying two large milk cans of the creamery. His vitality was wonderful and few men are privileged to enjoy so many years of perfect health as did our old friend who just passed away.
He was always good natured and even mirthful and if you understood him right, would indulge in anecdote and story for hours at a time. God-fearing and pious he was a true type of the earlier immigrants who settled in this community. He died at the home of his daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. John A Nelson of this village last Tuesday after an illness of six weeks and attained an age of 92 years, 9 months and 26 days.
Johan Magnus Horn was born in Stenbrohum parish, Smaland, Sweden, June 13, 1825. She resided in his native homeland until 1835, when he moved with his parents to Lessebo, where his father was engaged in the milling business. In 1885 he married Sarah Jonasson and emigrated from his native land to the US in 1868, coming first to Taylors Falls and soon thereafter settling on a homestead in Franconia Township, where he remained until 1894. He then retired from farming and moved to Center City where he was sexton of the church for a year and later janitor at the court house for a couple of years.
Since that time he has resided in his own little home on Currie Beach. Deceased leaves to daughters, Mrs. John A Nelson of Lindstrom( Cape Horn) and Mrs. August Swenson residing on the old Horn homestead in Franconia, two step children, Mrs. C D Foster, Cumberland, WIs, John P Horn, Old People's Home, Chisago City, besides one brother residing in Sweden, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. For fifty years Mr. Horn has been a devout member of Chisago Lake Church and in the Center City Cemetery near the hillside his mortal remains will be interred alongside of the grave of his wife who died 24 years ago.
Funeral services will be held from Center City church tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 pm, Rev Oscar Sandahl officiating. Only the immediate relatives will gather at the residence.
