Carl Albin Russel Blomster was born on July 25, 1909 at home in Fish Lake Township near Stark, Minnesota to Albin and Hilda (Swenson) Blomster. Like his siblings, Russel had two middle names, but he always went by Russel. I am quite certain he was given the first name of “Carl” as a result of the death of his mother’s brother, Carl Swenson, in 1908. It was a common Swedish tradition to “reuse” the name of someone who died in the family in honor of their life. His godmother was Johanna Swenson. He married Edith Wiberg in Cambridge on October 29, 1949. Russel died September 2, 1978 in Cambridge, Minnesota from cancer at the age of 69. They did not have any children.

Russel was a kind and quiet man. He farmed the home place on the shores of Horseshoe Lake which was homesteaded by his grandparents in the 1860s. He took over the farm when his father passed away in 1947. One time he tipped his John Deere tractor on a steep, icy road coming down from the Hog’s Back Road, but he didn’t get hurt. He was very ticklish. Galen and Sharolyn could literally take off his overalls by tickling him! They made him a wig out of old hair once. He was always a good sport. He snored almost as loud as Bobbi Blomster did! He played Santa for Grant and Marion, and Bobbi would get so full of laugh at him she couldn’t hold herself. Grant would get mad at her for laughing at Santa! He always got the new vehicle and new clothes, being the oldest sibling. Russel loved lutefisk and could eat a lot of it. Edith and he traveled to Sweden in 1972. He fought cancer in his last years. Grant tells that shortly before he died, Russel told him that his dad was in the corner of the room wearing his black hat. Galen remembers visiting Russel later and he kept staring at the corner of the room.
