Carl (Charlie) Ernest Swenson was born April 14, 1870 in Fish Lake Township at the homestead on Horseshoe Lake near Stark, Minnesota to Frank and Johanna Swenson. His birth name was Carl, but he always went by “Charlie”. He never married and died of typhoid fever at the age of 38 years on August 20, 1908. He died in Fish Lake Township and is buried in the Frank Svenson family grave at Fish Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Stark, Minnesota. We have several pictures of Charlie and his brother, and there is reference to Charlie being “the good looking one”!

After Charlie’s father, Frank died on February 2, 1891 from pneumonia, Charlie and his brother, John, took control of the farm, but every decision made needed Johanna’s permission. On October 19, 1891 John A. Swenson and Charles E. Swenson purchased an additional 40 acres from William and Ann Batt for $840. The mortgage on the land was payable 3 years after the date of sale to Ole Anderson with interest payable annually at the rate of 8% per annum. On Nov. 18, 1907 the land passed from joint ownership between Carl E. Swenson and John A. Swenson and his wife Sophia to Carl E. Swenson for $10. Carl Swenson died August 20, 1908 and the land passed to the sole heir at law, Johanna Swenson (widow), mother of the decedent, on July 16, 1909. Ironically, Charlie was referenced on various documents as either Charles or Carl, including the abstracts on land ownership.
