Dorothy Emily Marie Johnson was born on July 4, 1909 in her parental home at 2402 Bayless Ave in St. Paul, Minnesota. The second daughter born to Carl and Emily Johnson, Dorothy was reborn as a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on September 12, 1909. Of Swedish descent, Dorothy's maternal grandparents, Frank and Johanna Swenson, came to America in the mid 1860's and settled in Fish Lake, Minnesota.

In 1914 Dorothy's parents purchased a home in the Calvary neighborhood at 3908 14th Ave. S. When her father died in December 1920, this home was sold. Dorothy lived with her mother and sister Marguerite in various apartments in the vicinity of Calvary. In February 1988 she moved to the Park Center Apartments, where she lived until May 2nd, when she moved to Augustana Home to receive care and hospice during her final days.

Dorothy attended Bancroft Grade School and in 1926 she graduated from Minnesota College High School, a church-sponsored school located at Harvard and Delaware Sts. While in college, Dorothy played guard on the girl's basketball team at Gustavus Adolphus. Following her graduation from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1930, she took a two-year Bible training course at Lutheran Bible Institute in south Minneapolis.

Dorothy was a diligent worker. It was the Great Depression and jobs were scarce. Following her graduation from Gustavus, she worked part-time at her alma mater high school, tutoring in history and teaching summer school. She was then hired to set up the library in the new Folwell Jr. High School, a WPA project. In 1936 she went to work for the Augustana Children's Home as a matron for boys. From 1942 through 1953 Dorothy served as secretary to two State Printers for the State of Minnesota.

Following some time off to recuperate from illness, Dorothy began a 20-year career for the national church offices. From 1954 through 1962, she served the Augustana Synod at 2445 Park Ave. S. in the Dept. of Church Architecture and Building Finance. Following the merger in 1963, she worked for the Lutheran Church in America with the Board of Pensions and from 1967 until her retirement in 1974 with the Board of American Missions. Dorothy's faithful service to her beloved church was valued by many. And it brought her great satisfaction and joy to serve her Lord in this manner.

Calvary Lutheran Church was at the center of Dorothy's life. Her pride and joy was being a member of the first confirmation class with Dr. C. O. Granlund. This was a life-shaping experience, and following her confirmation on June 8, 1924 she kept in contact with many class members. As an adult, Dorothy was active in many capacities: as Vacation Bible School teacher, superintendent of the Primary Dept. of the Sunday School, a member of the Senior Choir, as secretary and chair of the Women's Missionary Society, the Church Library, and an active volunteer at Augustana Home.

Never wanting to call attention to herself, Dorothy served quietly and faithfully throughout her life. She was regular in worship at Calvary until well past her 90th birthday. Her health declined sharply during the past months and she died peacefully at Augustana home during the early hours of the Vigil of Pentecost, Saturday, June 10, 2000. Her earthly pilgrimage lasted 90 years, 11 months and 6 days. We thank God for giving Dorothy to us to know and to love. May God bless her memory to us all.
