Hilda Sophia Swenson was born September 1, 1874 at the Swenson homestead on Horseshoe Lake in Fish Lake Township, Chisago County, Minnesota to Frank and Johanna Swenson. She married Lars Albin Blomster on November 18, 1905 in St. Paul, MN at the age of 31. Hilda’s godparents were Mr. and Mrs. August Lindberg. After Hilda’s brother, Carl, died in 1908, Hilda and Albin moved from St. Paul to the Swenson homestead on the eastern shore of Horseshoe Lake near Stark, Minnesota in 1909 where they farmed and lived since they made this their home. Hilda and Albin had three children: Carl Albin Russel, Marion Eleanor Sophia Pearson and Grant Kenneth Eugene, all born at home. I would be willing to wager that Russel’s first name of “Carl” was given to him due to the death of Hilda’s oldest brother “Carl” the previous year. I always thought Hilda was attractive when she was young with her smooth skin and high cheek bones.

Hilda worked hard both on the farm and in the house caring and providing for her family. She was tall and lean when she was young and worked right alongside the men in the fields.

Hilda was called Bobbi in her later years because her grandson couldn't say Grandma. She worked hard all her life. She was the first one up in the morning getting the fire going, cooking and the last one to go to bed at night. She helped with outside work and kept the household going. She always wore her white hair in a bun with a hairnet, wore a “housedress” and in later years used a cane. After her husband Albin died in 1947 she lived with her son Russel on the family farm. She was a great cook and kept house for Marion and Lloyd Pearson in North Branch after Russel and Edith Blomster were married. Her bedroom was upstairs. She loved to watch wrestling, sitting in her rocker right in front of the TV. One did not interrupt or try to talk to her when wrestling was on. Vern Gagne was her hero and “The Crusher” was the bad guy, and you didn’t disagree with it. She snored really loud. She crocheted many things-doilies, afghans and made many quilts, which we are lucky to have. She never was one to sit and do nothing. Her conversation was sprinkled with Swedish words. She made great date rolled cookies, orange drop doughnuts, sugar cookies, and Swedish treats. We would have rusks for coffee, which we would dip in the coffee. She loved listening to her daughter Marion tell stories about the people she met and worked with at the grocery store. They had a big 90th birthday party for her at Russel’s home and her four sisters were there. The 5 sisters all lived long lives. In her early 90’s she had gall bladder surgery and never really recovered from that. She always liked the song, “The Old Rugged Cross”. Hilda died March 21, 1968 at the age of 93. She is buried in Fish Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, alongside her husband, Albin.
