Hulda Lydia Swenson was born March 11, 1882 to Frank and Johanna Swenson at the Swenson homestead on Horseshoe Lake in Fish Lake Township, Chisago County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Fish Lake Lutheran Church. She was married to George Edward Hammer on June 27, 1907 at Fish Lake Lutheran Church by Pastor Pihlgren. George and Hulda lived in Stanchfield, Minnesota where George was a butcher at the meat market for a while after they were married. George and Hulda then moved to Minneapolis where George was a fur buyer. A second cousin of George, Oliver Wilson, came to live with them after both his parents died in 1907 and 1908 when he was 3 years old. He and his 1-year old brother were taken to the Vasa Home after his parents' death. Oliver had polio at age 6, which left his left arm paralized for life. Oliver came to live with them in 1919 from the Vasa Home. He graduated from Minnesota College on May 26, 1922 and in a Commercial class at Minnesota College on July 24, 1923 and then Augsburg College in 1935. He graduated from Augustana Seminary, Rock Island on May 25, 1942 and was ordained at Calvary Lutheran Church in Minneapolis in 1942. He had two children Dorothy Ruth and David George.

George Hammer died from Hodgkin’s disease on January 25, 1922 and is buried at Lakewood Cemetery. Hulda lived with her sisters Esther and Mary in Minneapolis for many years before moving to the Augustana Home in Minneapolis where they lived until they died. Hulda kept a daily devotional book titled “With God and Friends Each Day” where she recorded all the births, deaths and weddings in her extended family. This book has been passed on to a number of people in the family over the years, and I currently maintain it. Hulda was also instrumental in writing down information on her parents’ and grandparents’ lives in Sweden and America. This has been extremely valuable in constructing information and stories in our ancestral tree. Hulda Hammer died February 11, 1973 at the age of 90. She is buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
